Handbike for wheelchairs
This design improves mobility for wheelchair users by propelling a “hand bike” using an oscillating hand-powered mechanism instead of the usual foot-pedal motion. This makes propulsion easier and provides a better workout for the upper body.
Every pulling and pushing movement on the lever arm generates propulsion. The disadvantage of the rotational drive—namely the two dead points where no propulsion can be generated—does not exist in this oscillating drive; here, sufficient power transmission is possible in every lever position.
An electric wheel hub motor can also be easily added. This invention was the subject of an HTL thesis and has been filed for a patent (10 2022 000 599.9)
